Our Approach to Special Needs Dentistry
We know that children with diverse needs may require extra preparation, accommodations, and flexibility. Our philosophy is simple: set each child up for success.
Here are some of the ways we set kids up for success:
- Pre-visit planning: Families may be asked to complete our Special Needs Questionnaire before the first appointment. This helps us understand sensory sensitivities, medical history, and preferred comfort tools and supports so we can prepare appropriately.
- Follow the child’s lead: We adapt to each child’s pace and comfort cues, letting them guide how the visit unfolds. That may mean starting in the waiting room, using the sensory room, or pausing often with the support of a favourite toy, blanket, or show. Parents share insight, but the child’s signals set the tone.
- Step-by-step comfort: We use a Tell-Show-Do method, trauma-informed care, and plenty of choices to reduce anxiety.
- Custom strategies: From weighted blankets and dimmed lights to breaks between steps, we adapt our pace to your child’s comfort level. We make note of their preferences and successful strategies in their chart, so every visit begins with trust and confidence.
Tooth Be Told
Sometimes, a first visit is simply about building comfort, rather than completing treatment. A “happy visit” is still a successful visit.
Parent and Caregiver Involvement
We view parents and caregivers as partners in care. Every visit includes clear communication and collaboration:
- Before the visit: We discuss comfort tools, triggers, and past dental experiences.
- During the visit: Parents may stay close by or step back, depending on what works best for their child. Support workers are welcome if you feel that will be a benefit for your child.
- After the visit: We review what worked, what didn’t, and strategies to try at home.
Every small victory helps children build confidence and set the stage for long-term oral health care.
How We Make Visits Easier
Dr. Kari personally trains her team on how to support children with behavioural challenges, sensory sensitivities, and complex needs. Our team also attends the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry’s annual conference to stay current with best practices in pediatric and special needs dentistry.
To make visits less intimidating, our dental clinic includes:
- Lay-flat hygiene benches that feel safer than a reclining dental chair.
- Sensory-friendly options such as dimmed lighting, quieter spaces, and calming tools.
- Flexible scheduling with early-day, low-stimulation appointment times for children who benefit from a calmer environment.
Sedation Options
Some children require additional support to receive dental care. Dr. Kari will review all sedation dentistry options carefully with parents and caregivers.
When appropriate, we may recommend:
- Nitrous oxide (laughing gas): A gentle, effective option for easing anxiety during treatment. The calming effect begins quickly and wears off just as fast, so kids leave the appointment feeling like themselves again.
- General anesthesia (GA): For extensive dental needs, young children, or children with significant sensory or behavioural challenges, GA may be the safest choice. Procedures are completed at trusted facilities, including Surgical Care for Children and the Alberta Children’s Hospital.
Oral sedation is used rarely, as it is less predictable than other approaches. Our priority is always safety, comfort, and preserving trust.
Preventive Care and Oral Health Education
Prevention plays a key role in protecting the oral health of children with special needs. Because some children may face higher risks of tooth decay, gum disease, or oral trauma, early and consistent care is essential.
Our dental services for children with special needs include:
- Regular check-ups and cleanings tailored to your child’s tolerance level.
- Fluoride treatments, sealants, and silver diamine fluoride for added protection against cavities.
- Oral health education for parents and caregivers, including brushing and flossing techniques that work for your child’s developmental stage.
- Diet recommendations to promote healthy teeth.
- Home-care strategies that fit into your family’s routine, including sensory tools that make brushing easier.
By focusing on prevention, we can often reduce the need for more complex procedures in the future.
Build Lifelong Healthy Dental Habits
Children with special needs may face challenges with self-care habits, but with consistency and the right tools, progress is possible. We support families by offering:
- Adaptive toothbrush and flossing tools.
- Visual aids or step-by-step oral hygiene routines.
- Coaching for caregivers on daily brushing and diet adjustments.
- Encouragement to celebrate small wins—like letting a toothbrush near the mouth or sitting in the dental chair without distress.
Our goal is to give parents the confidence to support their child’s oral health every day.

FAQs
How do I get my autistic child to the dentist?
Start by preparing them at home. Watch our “what to expect” video, bring comfort items like headphones or a tablet, and schedule early-day appointments when the office is quiet. At BabyTooth, we use gradual exposure, gentle techniques, and parent collaboration to make visits more manageable.
Will my child need general anesthesia for dental treatment?
Not always. Many children with special needs can complete treatment with behaviour guidance or nitrous oxide. General anesthesia is recommended only when necessary for safety, comfort, or when undergoing extensive treatment.
How can I help my child brush at home if they resist?
Use a team approach. Try adaptive toothbrushes, break the routine into small steps, or make it playful with songs and timers. Sometimes, practicing outside the bathroom (like on the couch) can help reduce stress.
Where can I find a special needs dentist near me?
BabyTooth is located in SE Calgary and offers specialized care for children with unique needs. Families choose us for our compassionate approach, preventive focus, and supportive environment.
