If your child recently had a tooth extraction, they  might complain about a small, sharp area in the gum during healing. This is a totally normal part of healing and is known as a bone spicule.

What Is a Bone Spicule After Tooth Extraction?

A bone spicule is a small bone fragment that works its way to the surface of the gum tissue as the extraction site heals. In many cases, this is a normal part of healing and not a sign of a complication.

After a tooth is removed, the surrounding bone reshapes and repairs itself. Small pieces of bone that are no longer needed may be pushed out through the gum.

What Does a Bone Spicule Feel Like?

A bone spicule often feels like a sharp or rough spot in the gum. It may feel similar to a small splinter or a hard edge when touched with the tongue.

It should cause only mild irritation. Some patients may notice slight tenderness, especially if the area is rubbed during eating or brushing.

How Are Bone Spicules Treated?

Most bone spicules will resolve on their own. As the gum continues to heal, the fragment may either work its way out or become covered by tissue.

If the area becomes uncomfortable or does not resolve, your dentist will gently remove or smooth the fragment. This is a quick and simple procedure.

How to Care for the Area at Home

Proper aftercare supports healing and reduces irritation if a sharp area is present.

  • Avoid picking or touching the area
  • Rinse gently if recommended by your provider
  • Continue brushing carefully around the site
  • Follow all post-extraction instructions

When to Contact Your Dentist

It is important to seek care if symptoms change and you notice:

  • Increasing pain or sensitivity
  • Swelling or signs of infection
  • A sharp area that does not improve
  • Difficulty eating or healing comfortably

FAQ

Is a bone spicule the same as a dry socket?

A bone spicule is a small piece of bone working its way out during healing. A dry socket is a painful condition where the blood clot is lost too early.

What does a bone spur look like after tooth extraction?

It may appear as a small white or yellowish point under or through the gum. Some patients notice a tiny, hard edge that can be felt with the tongue.

Can I remove a bone spicule at home?

No, attempting to remove it yourself can irritate the area or delay healing. It should be evaluated by a dental professional if needed.

Is a bone spicule an emergency?

In most cases, a bone spicule is not an emergency and will resolve as the area heals. Seek care if there is increasing pain, swelling, or signs of infection.
